Niklas Kniesche is a fifteen-year old tenth-grader from Providence, R.I. where he attends the Wheeler School. Niklas is trilingual in English, French and German, a math and computer wizard, and the #1 player on the Wheeler squash team. He began piano lessons at age five, has been a student of Marilyn Roth (ages of 7-14) and Jonathan Bass (15-) at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School. His awards include 1st , 2nd and 3rd prizes in the Steinway Society of Massachusetts competition and multiple honors at the University of Rhode Island Piano Extravaganza, the most recent being 1st prize in the Senior Division, 2015. Niklas was a finalist in the NEC Prep Concerto Competition. The 2015 Rivera Competition awarded him First Prize in the Open Division, and the Bach award for the most outstanding performance of the required Prelude and Fugue. Summer Festivals have included the 4th Rotarischer Sommerkurs 2010 at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar, Germany, the 2013 International Institute for Young Musicians at the University of Kansas in Lawrence where Niklas was chosen to play in the Honors Recital, the 2015 Alberta Piano Festival in Canada where he was selected to play in a master class with Jerome Lowenthal and another with Jason Cutmore and where he also was chosen for the final concert. Niklas has also participated in three NEC Summer Piano Institutes: Clara and Robert Schumann; Franz Liszt; and Claude Debussy.  At NEC he performed in the 2011 Milton Babbit Memorial Concert, and at Boston University the 2013 Debussy Festival.  In June 2014 he participated in the NEC piano tour and performed in the Mozarthaus in Vienna and the Béla Bartók Conservatory in Budapest where he also played in a masterclass for Gabór Eckhardt. In 2015 he played in a master class for Yves Henry at NEC. Niklas has been a composition student of Rodney Lister for five years and performed his own compositions along with pieces by contemporary guest composers during the Today’s Youth Perform Today’s Music events playing pieces by John Harbison (2015), Jefferson Friedman (2012), Michael Finissy (2011) and Sir Peter Maxwell Davis (2010).  Niklas is in the Certificate Program at NEC Prep and anticipates completing Level III in May, 2015. He is looking forward to participating in the 2016 NEC Piano tour to Leipzig, Weimar and Berlin, and to his master class with Maestro Aquiles Delle Vigne in the Centro Internationale di Studi Deradiani in Otranto, Castello Aragonese in Puglia, Italy.
